Тонкая пограничная структура, расположенная на поверхности клеток и внутриклеточных частиц, а также канальцев и пузырьков в клеточном содержимом. Выполняет различные биологические функции – обеспечивает проницаемость клетки для различных веществ, транспорт продуктов обмена и другие.

цитоплазматическая мембрана — plasma membrane, unit membrane, cytoplasmic membrane
Барьер, отделяющий цитоплазму клеток от окружающей среды. Состоит из двойного липидного слоя, в который встроены интегральные белки мембран; играет важнейшую роль в обмене веществ; служит осмотическим барьером клетки и контролирует поступление веществ внутрь клетки и из неё; в цитоплазматической мембране имеются механизмы активного транспорта и системы субстрат-специфичных пермеаз. Регулируемый транспорт веществ осуществляется через каналы.
полупроницаемая мембрана — semipermeable membrane, septum
Пористая мембрана, через которую проходят малые молекулы, например вода и неорганические ионы, но представляющая барьер для прохождения больших молекул, таких, как сахара и белки. Большинство биологических мембран полупроницаемы.
Тёмно-красные пятна в цитоплазматической мембране галобактерий (в частности, Halobacterium halobium). Цвет обусловлен наличием бактериородопсина.
Плазматические мембраны бактериальных, животных и растительных клеток, сходство между строением которых позволяет говорить об универсальной элементарной мембране.
